Upcoming Contest And Some Announcements

by Melvin · Jan 4, 2009

edit: My contact form is not functioning well, henceforth send an email to melvin@melvinblog.com if youre intrested in sponsoring

Hello everyone and hope you just had a nice holiday altogether.

Last week I mentioned that I have a pretty nice plan for my blog for its first full year at helm. So today I’m letting you know that there will be  contest brewing up here soon. And by saying contest, I just don’t mean “contest” like most people would say “oh another fuck up contest” or “just another contest”. I am really preparing well for this contest which happened to be very first contest of the Melvin Blog. In contest, what I really had in mind is you, readers more than any traction that I can get for this one. I wanted to give you the best you can for reading and still making this blog a profitable special one. So here I am really working so hard to make this contest an unforgettable one to everyone!

So did I just say this is a special contest? What makes it special in the first place? Although I don’t want to disclose as much details here, maybe giving you a sneak peak wouldn’t hurt right? 😉 Basically some premium sponsors for this contest are affiliate networks like Pepperjam Network and Copeac giving away hardcore prizes. And who’s sitting on the backseat side of the premium sponsors? Oh I am very elated to say Dean Hunt, Caroline Middlebrook and Zac Johnson have all shown interest with sponsoring this contest. Now what are they sponsoring? That’s the secret you have to watch for! 🙂 So if you don’t want to miss this one maybe you should now subscribe to my feed.

Enter your email address:

Delivered by FeedBurner

Just as I said I wanted this contest to be special I am still looking for more sponsors so we could definitely add up the prize pool and make it more fun. You could use the contact form to give me your offers. With regards to sponsoring prizes, I would definitely love to see something more creative rather than just the usual ad spots for some months, or a text link or such stuffs like that. Maybe a cup of coffee or a book? It’s all up to you guys.

The Melvin Blog Incentives

So another announcement is that the newest portion of the blog is now alive and its what I call the incentives part of Melvin Blog. Basically the site is like “get paid to” type of site but more direct in approach. The site pays people to complete offers and basically some offers have cash pots wherein participants can win bigger cash for participating. Unfortunately, the launch of it went flat and only one has eventually completed an offer and of course ended up winning the cash pot of $5. Obviously it’s a loss but eventually there’s a room for so much improvement. I would also like to hear some suggestions to you on how I could possibly improve it. 😉

Spam Spam Go Away

by Melvin · Jan 2, 2009

Everyone who has a blog knows that pain of dealing with spam comments and trackbacks. Of course, the more popular the blog is the higher the spam content it may receive each day. For this blog, I think it has about 3000 spam comments caught by Akismet since it started last May. Now while Akismet does a very nice job of catching spam comments from your blog, we cannot ignore the fact that we still always double check it, in case it catches false postives. Right? Although normally the rates are very low then and it seems that Akismet has improved so much since the day it started.

So here now I am going to show you other guides/tips that can help you fight and reduce spam on your blog:

  1. Comment-Timeout – I am pretty surprised not a lot of people use this plugin but what this plugin does is simply close the comment form of the blog posts that are older than 3 months or so. You can set it to whatever you may wish for but certainly its a nice plugin that helped me reduce the number of spams I receive every day. Comment-Timeout is a nice plugin I swear!
  2. Hold a Comment if it has 1 link! – Now this is what i have just learned last month. Basically there will come a time a guy will follow you and comment genuinely. In wordpress, upon approving the comment of a certain guy/email, it basically just accepts each and every comment of that guy then. So after quite some time, the spammer then use that to spread spam links on my blog and fortunately I thwarted him before he could do so much. Always hold a comment for moderation if it contains a link!
  3. Use the Comment Moderation Box – In the settings of your discussion in wordpress admin, you’ll see a semi-sized box wherein you can put ip, emails and etc. What you might want to put here is the list of proxies provided by TOR. You can also search for other open proxy ips and try to list them as well. Proxy is a great way to surf anonymously but oh boy spammers just take advantage of it so well!
  4. Wp-ban – This is another wordpress plugin and it does display a custom ban message when the banned IP, IP range, host name or referer url trys to visit you blog. You can also exclude certain IPs from being banned. There will be statistics recordered on how many times they attemp to visit your blog. It allows wildcard matching too. I don’t use it here, but if you have a very popular blog or maybe you are the target of the spammers, then it can be useful.
  5. Trackbacks – trackbacks are one easy way to spam and spread links on other people’s site. What happens is that spam blogs will send a trackback to you w/your own content. Before I wasn’t aware w/it, so I just approve every trackbacks I receive. You must always take a look at a site before accepting their trackspams!

So that’s it. What you will find out is that most of the solutions are just inside wordpress itself. If you know a little programming then you expand things more depending on your knowledge. Just always back up! 🙂

Can Your Blog Survive 2009?

by Melvin · Dec 30, 2008

I know the title is a little funny for you guys and most of you will not even take it seriously. This is the first time my blog will face the month January , February, March, April and to be serious Im dead excited about it. It feels like I am going on to a fresh start. Im also thrilled because I have a plan already laid out for the blog in its first 6 months and I can assure you its gonna be exciting. There’s something in me that screams I should focus more on maintaining this blog more than anything else. 😉

Anyway back to the question. Actually its a question to a more broader bloggers/audience and not just for the readers of the blog. I know and I’m 80% sure of my top commentators and those who were following me since I started can survive. But then its like most just won’t. Yesterday I was reading my old posts and those people who commented on it. Some do not have the blog anymore but the domain is parked, some just stopped posting and seemed to have lost interest with it or maybe busy and unfortunately some have completely abandoned it. I can’t blame them (and you can’t) but its just like these things happen and sometimes its inevitable. There were times were I want to tell people that no matter how busy and crappy their life is they should still hold on to their blog. I’ve realized then its not fair to tell them that.

As some of you know, this blog is hosted on a monthly basis (via subscription) and while I am thrilled to experience paying monthly bills because its more challenging and hassle-unfree, maybe their’s a day where all of a sudden my paypal balance goes $0. You’ll never know. Right now, Im more inclined of receiving checks as a form of payment and in my country its not possible to transfer money from the bank to paypal. After all I realize that maybe I am in the same situation with most bloggers who were unsure about the future of their beloved blogs. But of course, thinking today, its goddamn impossible.. 😉

I see a lot of guys setting a goal for your blog and Im thrilled reading those things. But you see, things happen very quick! Maybe tomorrow my flip is gone, then next month my camera, then my computer! How about you, do you think you have everything it takes to maintain a blog for another year? Can your blog survive the year of the ox?

Year 2008 – Looking Back On Today

by Melvin · Dec 28, 2008

Around the blogosphere now I see a lot of people doing this, revisiting if they have accomplished their goals this year and do a list of goals for the next year. Actually I am really interested into reading this kind of stuffs and its nice to see how people actually fare with the current year. Anyway now I would want to share with you guys the year 2008 for me and how it has made impact on my life. Unlike most post, I wouldn’t want to talk much about the internet business and how I do some moolah online and so. Instead I like to share things that are far from that.

Ok, January up to March is a pretty fare and challenging month to me. Actually that is the third trimester for school and its just harder than what I thought. Initially we had subjects like Computer Systems Org which talks Assembly language which sucks. I also have like Object-Oriented Programming during that time. As I’ve said its hard, I barely passed those two subjects and kinda hang on as one of the students in our group that hasn’t fail any subjects since first year (or since kindergarten). Then here comes summer and oh boy its really hot during summer. This is where I struggled as the eldest brother in my family. Why? It’s because I care so much about things. I tend to have short patience with things and occassionally its hard to control myself with what I say. It’s been a struggle for me to be a nice image for my younger brothers w/o hurting them w/my sharp retorts. Oh well…

Then before the classes started I built this blog. Actually a day after purchasing the domain, getting a host and putting my first post, I was confined in a hospital for 4 days for being stressed too much, low blood, and dengue fever. Hospital sucks and everyone agrees I know. June then is the start of the class again and Im in the third year college. As always school is nice. I felt I was bright enough to get high grades and split time well with affiliate marketing, blogging and studies. Studying has always been fun and I know most students don’t say but they definitely have something on them that agrees with it. Funny jokes during lunch times, mocking people’s miseries and so on so fort. Seeing your crush, seeing ugly people, professors and poor security guards. Then of course the trimester ended before Christmas.

During November and December, I also kinda have the worst months on my online business in that year. What a time to come! Basically I felt I need to grow my business and we started out increasing our budgets with campaigns, started out hiring this one and that and pay hosting, domain and etc. That pretty mcuh hurted us financially (particularly me) as we lost over a thousand dollars. How? Its a long story and maybe I could talk about it for quite some time. I felt sad and thought Christmas would be sad for me because I’m poor (literally poor). But well god is great and I was still able to celebrate Christmas nicely. I was still able to buy gifts for my love ones and gifts for myself. Honestly as I write my ending thoughts about this last paragraph, I still couldn’t think of what I learned this year (seriously). Maybe its deep on me that I have to dig(g) it or have someone dig it for me so I could remember it. But well so far, I believe thats it. Im still young and these experiences make people grow.

MelvinBlog Dot Com’s Wishlist

by Melvin · Dec 26, 2008

So while enjoying the joy (of eating foods) and spirit of the holiday season, the thought of having an own Amazon Wishlist suggested by Shoe entered my mind. Immediately I sit at my computer and started what we will call “The Melvin Blog’s Holiday Wishlist”  The crap consists of things I crave and I need. 🙂

Anyway while thinking someone could actually just grant my wishes on Amazon, the thought of having this wishlist just sparked something on me. An yes its the old adage “work harder” thing… Seriously I badly want stuffs there like Butters talking statue toy. But then after realizing reality, I’ve come to a conclusion that actually I can buy those stuffs maybe if I focus more…

Unless there’s someone who will do it for me… 🙂

How I Do Affiliate Marketing (Email Submits)

How I Do Affiliate Marketing (Email Submits)

by Melvin · Dec 23, 2008

This post is actually an entry to Jim’s The Net Fool Christmas Contest. This by far is the post that I have spent so much time writing and proof-reading. Could be easily one of the better post for this sucking blog. 🙂

As like what I have said before, affiliate marketing is a very nice way to make money online but not everyone really succeeds on it. I’m not even sure to say I am successful with it, how is success being defined anyway? 🙂

Anyways in this post I would talk about how I run email submit types of offers. Email Submits is one of the easiest offer to promote and if done and tweaked properly, it can yield a good revenue for you without that much worrying with the expenses

So enough with those lines let’s start. Two things first. First, I would want to say this is how I do it and of course I am not a super affiliate. Second, I am afraid this is not a dummy guide so you cannot accept this information as a goldmine. Let’s just say everything here is two cents! 🙂

I would like to explain everything as spontaneous aems possible. I’m afraid if you’re a complete newbie, you’ll have a hard time getting it.  Here we go. First is you have to pick an offer from an Affiliate Network, Market Leverage as an example. In this walkthrough, I would use email and zip submits to start with as I am currently obsessed promoting those stuffs today.

When picking an offer, try to think as possible. You always have to choose what is in demand and unique or else you’re not gonna go anywhere. For example, during the time when Obama and McCain are battling for the Presidency there are ton of email submit types of offer that pays $1.50 that relates to it. You see, during that time I was running campaigns related to that and easily made $200 on a week. The point here is that you have to go to a niche wherein there is a lot of interest from people.

Another thing you have to look for is the site’s landing page. Why? Because , it plays a part on your campaigns converting or not too. If the certain offer’s landing page isn’t that good enough (to attract customers) then you might be wasting your effort with it. Remember that we are just running an email submit so the landing page of an offer is just important. So as an example I will pick the UK Macbook email offer:

Now that we have picked an offer, we have to choose whether we are going to direct link to it or build a landing page. Direct linking is just simply just sending your visitors directly to the offer’s page while w/your own landing page, you can do a page and have them click on the link that will send them to the actual offer.

For a nice read about them, here’s Clickconsultants article about their comparison. But well for email and zip submits that we are using here, I just recommend linking to them directly as I just feel its not necessary for a landing page for this types of offer. One thing when you direct link is that Google increases your price per click. Another is that you are not going to get organic/natural traffic from search engines. Don’t worry these are just minimal disadvantages because what we are running here is just a simple email submit.

Now we head on to Adwords (what I often use). If you don’t have an Adwords account, signing with them is free (unlike YSM that you have to deposit some dollars!) Now that you are in Adwords and ready to start a campaign, click the create new campaign, keyword targeted. The first part is all basics like naming your campaign, naming your ad group and what language. But one thing most newbies forget to set is the country that they are targeting. I believe by default it is set to your own country (Philippines here for instance). Look what countries the email submit offer is accepting then choose it. For our offer the country is United Kingdom

Now we’re gonna create our ad. In creating there isn’t really anything that can be said right. Actually its all about testing what will work out and what will not. Don’t set a campaign that has only one ad group in them. Try to put as many ad groups on a campaign as you can targeted with specific keywords grouped on each. We are gonna use them lately as monitoring channels on how our campaign is working. But as always, try to be honest as possible. Don’t fool them with your deceptive ads. Remember we are looking for conversions and not just  clicks. For our example I made something like this:

Oh and I forgot that when you create a campaign, try to disable the search. We will be getting our clicks from content networks and not from the search engine and besides we are direct linking to an offer so we’re immediately disqualified for the search.  For disabling the search, here’s a screenshot I did.

Now we’re on Keywords. Remember when choosing keywords, don’t just dump ten million keywords on your list. Most of the terms, you’ll realize are just junk terms that have low volumes. It is believed that search engines penalize us by doing so. It’s important to just stick with what really the offer is all about. Also you can see above that I append the term {keyword} at the end of the destination URL. It allows Google to dynamically insert the keyword that was searched for when the person clicked on the ad. This will allow you to run reports later on to see which of your keywords convert best. You can use the Google Keyword Tool as it gives a basic overview of what to expect on keywords and the number of searches they have and stuffs like that.

You can use the Google Keyword Tool as it gives a basic overview of what to expect on keywords and the number of searches they have and stuffs like that.

Now that we have set our keywords, its time to set our pricing. Now most people starting out are afraid to shred budgets for a campaign. So for this email submit, we would be using a low budget campaign. Normally I do set my daily budget to $10 -$20 a day for these types of offer. Now while we want to be in a low budget type, what we don’t want here is to blow our budget. While our budget is just $20 a day, we still should spend the money like we are a hardcore marketer. What do I mean? Don’t bid on clicks for $0.01 or slightly higher than that. For these types of offer I normally bid $0.5 up to $1 (it depends still on what you are offering).

When I start campaigns, what I normally want even from the start is the volume. In getting the volume, you could easily scale your campaigns and do the necessary adjustments. But for newcomers, I suggests you just bidding $0.3 -$0.7 when starting. Unless you’re getting frequent payout  increases like I do, then you might not want to bid just a cent w/what the payout is. 🙂 Don’t worry because the first few days is pretty much for testing, and optimizing. Remember that we set a low budget that we could definitely afford so theres nothing much to worry about our Adwords Bill at the end of the month.

So whats next? Now that we have everything set up, we just need to analyze and do more testing. For this, I do normally check the stats every afternoon and do the adjustments and then check again the stats before I sleep at night. Because we are direct linking, we don’t need to care about things like bounce rate.

If you go at your campaign descriptions, you will definitely see what is the position of your ad, the impressions, the clicks and CTR. If you’re position is too low, try to increase your bids. If you’re getting a lot of impression but no clicks, then try to rewrite the ad. You might also need to rotate different ads to see what’s the best performing ad. Take a look at this:

monitor

Now remember in affiliate marketing, you’ll have to keep punching. You must have the balls to see what isn’t working and what is working. Doing the right things, doesn’t mean ending up with the best results. Test and test and test and you’ll see. When will you start generating leads? As soon as you’re getting clicks! We are direct linking and we are promoting an email submit offer (remember it!) so it’s not that hard to convert a click to a profit.

Learn how to develop the best keyword strategies for a solid SEO foundation.

Although the “per lead” price tag is not big, it can be better for anyone to test these types of offer as they are low-risked. Maybe I can write more about how I monitor my campaigns on the future posts… 🙂

Are You Slacking Just Because It’s Holiday?

by Melvin · Dec 20, 2008

With the Christmas getting closer and closer, I know most people are slacking, relaxing and have stopped working on generating more income for themselves. I know most are busy shopping and thinking of what to do this holiday season and I know some people are busy spending this holiday maybe in a romantic place to spend some time with their love ones? I know that all too well, because I am, too! 😉

Of course, it’s not really that I have not generated any sort of income this month but I just received some of the payments so I became lackadaisical. It’s really hard to work harder now because of a lot of things. First is that i was just coming off a bloody school week wherein we did defend our application project, we did some thesis which worth about 1000 pages, took exams that are mind boggling(somehow) and think of gifts to give for Christmas. And honestly it just made me think i need to take a break now for all the stuffs I am doing online. Just gotta relax for quite sometime

But then you gotta be thinking, “Melvin, I thought you’re business is autopilot?” Actually affiliate marketing could be and couldn’t be an autopilot business. Of course you can run campaigns and sleep but if you don’t pay much attention to it, chances are you’re not gonna make any revenue at all. So, another problem for me that hindered me from affiliate marketing is that my credit card isn’t functioning well. I mean Adwords have stopped my campaigns because they couldn’t get to process the payment through my cc. wtf! It’s like close to a month now and I don’t have a spare credit card and they don’t accept debit card payment here in Philippines. That’s why. It has also become apparent that my chances w/regards to winning some aff.marketing challenge has become thinner! What the fuck!

Anyway, with me slacking and doing nothing like an asshole I started to see the value of some of the things I do. First is my 3.5 ft coinbank. It hasn’t even reached the middle but when i opened it’s close to $80 which is nice since I just started it last month. Now I have extra $80 in case I need it for something. Also with my PPC campaigns getting paralyzed for the mean time, I have started to think creatively and do something different to make some pennies at least. For me its good because I have been w/pay per click for the rest of my life and have become dependent on it.

So w/us slacking this Christmas I don’t really see wrong with. Christmas is the time for relaxing and giving and whatsoever. Everyone is entitled to do what they want for this holiday. I might be slacking w/these things online but sure I never slacked w/my studies, sure I never slacked w/preparations for Christmas. I might have not made a lot for a month that most people think they should do the most but at least i know I can bounce back next year. So maybe I’m not slacking at all. 😉

Are you slacking w/your thing this Christmas?
