Why I Pulled Out the MMO Blog Monetizer off the Market

Why I Pulled Out the MMO Blog Monetizer off the Market

by Melvin · Jun 17, 2010

MMO Blog Monetizer, what a horrible name, isn’t it? Anyways for those of you who just started reading this blog since this year, that is actually my first and only product that I released last year and took off the market after a couple of months. The product is all about monetizing make money online blogs (and other blogs closely related to mmo).

So basically when people ask me why I took it off, I usually respond that its because Im going to use it for larger project and of course to avoid saturation. Do you actually believe it? Heck, that is a marketer’s reason always! I mean you see products that are taken off the market and there’s always a reason/s why it happens. And it’s always related to business.

Anyways those two reasons I mentioned are true and I didn’t lie (or perhaps I did) when I said that. However that’s just 5% of the whole story. And in this somewhat controversial post, im going to detail to you the other reasons why I took it off the market.

My First Info Product

That MMO Blog Monetizer thing is my first info product. As i’ve always expressed here in my blog, I’m quite allergic with info products. In my post entitled “Does reading eBooks really help you make money“, I ripped off most eBooks and basically claimed that when you purchase one, don’t expect anything.

I followed that post with a how to steal an eBook post in which I outlined several ways on how most marketers are retarded for just exposing their products without them knowing it. So it’s kind of ironic for me to start my own product especially if its an info product right?

Anyways, the first reason is that my eBook sucks. Nope, not that its of crap value and not that I received gazillions of refunds. I re-read the book after 6 months and it’s really bad in formatting, kind of disorganized, text are not spaced-out well. I didn’t use that much image and I have some crappy grammatical errors, name them!

So what I eventually had in mind was that I’m going to close it out because I don’t want people to make fun of my eBooks crappiness, formatting-wise. Although no one has really complained with the crappiness of the product, I’d like to make sure that I need to work harder on that aspect more and so I decided to take it off and seek professional advice more on that side.

Not the Easiest product to Comprehend

Most first-time info marketers really make this mistake. They tend to create their products for themselves, considering themselves as their audience. Again the takeaway on marketing something is that “we are not our customer” and it applies to creating info products as well.

Actually I re-read the eBook a couple of times as well as have some of my friends read it for me. We did some editing and thought it was all fine already. Eventually it was not. I used a lot of jargons that were hard for some readers to understand.

This is really one of the hardest things for me. I’m never good at walking people through on basic stuffs that I oftentimes just butcher it completely. The downside for me was that I got a lot of support questions from people since the product was really hard to understand especially for noobs.

It’s expensive

Yes it is. It was priced at $14 for a 17 page eBook and some bonuses. Now I don’t want to tell the product doesn’t have good quality. It has, and that is one of the things Im proud with. But with that, I realized I need to throw in some other couple of valuable stuffs to make it the perfect product.

These days, most product claim that their product is more than what its worth. That was where I failed before. I should’ve added more than just the core product.

Timelessness

And of course just like anything, things get outdated. The main reason why MassControl and Traffic Secrets have 2.0 versions is because they were updated and most of the content inside were catered for the time it was released.

That’s my same goal with that product. Its funny because I threw in a ton of coupon codes inside only to realize that they were already not working anymore. Some of the screenshots were also old-ish so that was I was trying to achieve with that.

MMO 2.0 – Watch out!

And if you got a sense from the beginning of reading this article that I am about to expose something in the end, then you’re right. šŸ˜‰ I’m currently working out super hard on producing the 2.0 version of the product. I’m eliminating and improving all of the flaws I mentioned above and I’m sure you will like it better than LA Lakers capturing the NBA Title.

MMO Monetizer 2.0

I may give this product away for FREE or may not. I may sell this for lower pricing or higher pricing. There’s a lot of uncertainties right now but two things are sure. One is that it’s going to be of perfect quality and second is that people who are gonna opt-in to the early bird waiting list will get massive discounts and tons of good value bonuses and throw-ins. Get inside now!

Post Note: MMO 2.0’s early list is different from the blog’s mailing list so make sure you get in. šŸ˜‰

What My Readers Are Saying With the Free Report

by Melvin · Jun 15, 2010

Not so long ago, I gave away my first “freemium” product on blogging which is all about marketing blogs competitively. The book was titled “Blog Marketing for Fame” and its a little report where I tackled several ways to make your blog popular by employing creative and competent strategies.

So like any other marketer/blogger, I immediately seek their opinion about the product and so far so good. šŸ˜‰

Vic Soriano says:

Your report is indeed very much informative. I am amazed at your writing skills and would love to meet you in person one day. I am much older than you are but I am learning a lot from you. Continue sharing your knowledge and being a blessing to others that God may bless you even more!

SantoshKumar B says:

yeah it was beneficial n i find it nesessary for future work..thankss..

Elie Palima says:

The ebook was Great. I learned alot. thanks! šŸ˜‰

I like the idea about guest blogging. actually I’ve thought about it a lot for quite sometime now.

Brook says:

Sound strategies but very advanced tactics. I like the way you pointed out guest blogging and creative advertising. I find it all innovative

Now I don’t want to fill this post with testimonials for the poor sake of bragging. This is entirely risk-free, you just sign up with the newsletter, get your copy and then read it. If you don’t like it, fine, you can delete it w/no problem at all. But I’m sure if you pay attention well to the product, you can actually benefit a lot from it.

Well just to clarify, the free eBook is just an icing. By subscribing to the newsletter, the main benefit you are going to get is the insider tips, premium email newsletter and case studies that I don’t usually publish here in this blog. Those are really good stuffs and in fact, I’m even considering on selling those insider messages someday as a paid product.

Lastly, the newsletter is entirely me sending you good stuff, not some random guy or a part of the staff (unlike some big marketers). You can see that I’m even using my personal email so any time you feel like replying or clarifying something from the newsletter, I’d be able to help up asap. šŸ™‚ So make sure you’re in!

Do make sure you’re not missing the newsletter or maybe if you have already downloaded the product, make sure to give your take as well.

Things I don’t Like with Guest Blogging Contests

by Melvin · Jun 12, 2010

Every summer it’s noticeable that contests spring up like mushroom as you can almost find them anywhere. In fact, here in this blog there is a current contest running that started this June. That being said, we can conclude that summer is contests season.

Anyways, the days where the contest is all about subscribing to feed, blogging about it, digging, stumbling it are probably gone. What you’d notice today is that a lot of bloggers have become more creative in creating their own contests. What’s in today is guest blogging contests which at the same I’d like to talk about.

The latest is the one that Smartbloggerz is currently running while the other same type of contest can be found here and there. That being said, guest blogging contests is something that will happen more in the future as its becoming the newest trend for contests.

Guest blogging has really exploded for the past 2 years now as evident with the whole scene. In fact some bloggers like Carl Ocab and even Problogger have already let the guest posters post majority of their content. Back to the contests, I can say I’m not really a big fan of those although I participate a lot into it. For me it’s kind of like ruining the whole guest posting strategy and here are my thoughts.

The Goal Becomes Different

People would argue about it since in order to win these contests you have to write good content right? The problem with this is that your focus shifts from reaping the benefits of a guest post featured to winning the contest all out. I mean normally with guest posts what I usually do is make sure the readers of that post will be catered as much as possible to my blog, get replies for their comments and me tracking numbers, optimizing whats working out and what’s not.

With contests, it becomes really different. Instead of doing things I listed above, I would then focus more on writing more and more guest posts for that contest, observe where am I currently standing, do I have a good chance of winning or not and things like that. Nothing really bad about but its like the true essence of doing guest posts diminishes.

Readers’ interaction Differs Considerably

Another thing I don’t like with it is that its really hard to reap the same benefits from it as oppose to writing a guest article for the sole purpose of making a guest post. I was tracking my stats (again my fave hobby, lols) and what I found out is that not a lot of people really read the article and go to your blog. For instance I wrote a guest post before and it gave me like 35% bounce rate to my site which is an exceptional rate. After quite some time I did another guest post with the same blog but this time just got a 69% rate. Of course things could vary depending on other factors but I’m sure the “contest” factor is one of the bigger factors.

When guest blogging becomes a contest, most of the consumers of the post becomes the contestant and oftentimes they are just lurking there to see and track how other contestants are doing.

Lesser Traffic

This is the obvious disadvantage of this. We, as guest posters will receive lesser traffic and obviously lesser bang for our efforts when we guest post more for the contest than for the intrinsic purpose of it. I mean if you see an awesome guest posts and then you saw a note saying “this is an entry to blah blah, join now and get a chance to win $XXXX”. I mean what would you do? Naturally we will participate. There’s really nothing to blame. You can’t blame the owner who hold the contest nor you can blame the sponsors that made that pot got that high. There’s no oneĀ  to blame because its human nature, you see a contest related to you, odds are high that you’ll join it.

Overall, if guest blogging contests keep on growing more and more, it will definitely have a big impact on how traditional guest blogging works. With things I mentioned, it can be hard to really see the essence of doing guest posts aside from targeting those contest prizes.

But then I don’t have any problem with thatĀ  (or just a small problem), in fact I’m even one of those who are competing to dominate win it. But still at the end of the day, you’re still gonna wonder where all of these things head into. What say you?

Best Blog Marketing Tip Contest Updates & Clarifications

by Melvin · Jun 9, 2010

So last week I launched probably one of the biggest contest in blogging history and so far I’m receiving awesome feedbacks and some suggestions as well. As I’ve said, no contest is perfect and suggestions like this can only improve the contest and make it much more enjoyable.

In a span of a week, the contest official post has become one of the most viewed pages in the blog for this year!Ā  It’s amazing that it even got retweeted by big bloggers like Neil Patel and John Chow.

But that being said, there is only a couple of entries yet for the contest. In my opinion, I think it coincides with the fact that the contest will run still up to July 15 and most “wise” bloggers would prefer to observe and speculate first before joining. While it’s a wise and clever tactic, I may have to say that starting the contest early is still the BEST way to get it done. Why? Because by doing it early, you will get more traffic, more social media exposure, more retweets, comments and more importantly you can still improve your article based on feedbacks. But then still its up to you.

Another issue I’d like to clear is on whether traffic from blog is a huge part or not. Actually its not. It accounts for less than 30% and I did that thing because I know there are many blogs out there who don’t have that much traffic, yet are writing good content. Remember that we have judges and 70% ofĀ  the criteria is about the quality. I know most of the recent contests give emphasis on promotion but as I’ve said, the goal of this contest is more on giving back to the blogosphere.

Second, I usually receive the question “What if I don’t have the best blog marketing tip?”

To be honest, is there really is? Perhaps yes, but it’s really all about trying to become creative and intercepting that and the need of your readers. If you can do that I can pretty much guarantee that it is going to be a recipe for success.

You see blogging is not new anymore. You can find soooo many marketing topics already covered around the internet. I’m not saying you should read and rehash those articles, what I’m implying is that you have to be innovative. For me most of the articles on the subject is either incomplete and unclear or is badly outdated.

It’s like essay, give your best shot because there’s no best answer. That’s why we have judges.

And lastly, it doesn’t have to be a walkthrough. I know most of us are psyched that long article means good quality. It is, but that doesn’t mean that you have to write a 2000ish word article to qualify. If a 500-word article can do it, then Im fine with that. Right now most bloggers are not newbies anymore so if you can eliminate all the super detailed noob info stuffs, then good.

And here’s the FAQ I set up specifically just for this one:

The contest will run for how long?

It will run from June 1 up to July 15 12 AM ET

Is there any requirement aside from writing articles?

You have to link back to the contest post so I can track your entry.

How if a trackback isn’t generated?

That happens in rare cases but if it ever does, just comment on my blog or hit me up personally.

Any hardened-fast rules on the article where going to make?

None. Just make sure its your best blog marketing tip. šŸ˜‰

How many winners are going to be selected?

There will be 3 winners from the main writing contest and 10 winners on the retweet contest. As said in the contest post, there are going to be mini contests in the middle of the duration so watch out

Can I bribe a judge to make me win?

Yes, if you know them. šŸ˜‰

Do I have to comment on the post?

No, its not required

Is retweeting a mandatory condition to win the contest?

No. It’s another contest.

If I don’t like the prize can I convert it to cash?

Essentially no. But the safer answer is it depends on the sponsor.

Can I make a series post instead of the usual one long post?

Yes. Whatever you want it will be just fine

When is the deadline for submitting entries?

July 15 12 AM Eastern Time

Do I have to link out to all the sponsors?

Definitely not.

If you have any more concerns, do so here in the comment form. All relevant questions will be added in this FAQ page

MelvinBlog’s Best Blog Marketing Tip Contest

by Melvin · May 31, 2010

Update: This contest has been extended up to July 25. For more info, read here:

It has finally come. Today I am bringing you probably the largest contest in the history of MelvinBlog Dot Com. This contest commemorates the second year of this blog (funny how I thought its 3 years) and as I’ve planned, we’ll celebrate it with a big bang!

I have been preparing this contest since early last month and I want to make sure that my contest is going to be different. I’m very proud to have had this contest finally polished.

Introducing the MelvinBlog’s Best Blog Marketing Tip Contest

Best Blog Contest

This contest says it all. The contest will be about blog marketing which is part of what this blog tackles on an everyday basis. And to the sponsors. I can’t believe we were able to get this much prize for the contest. Compared to last year’s contest, we basically doubled the amount of the prizes and Im really thankful for the sponsors for that. As you know me, I just don’t get every Dick and Harry as sponsors. We got reputable and popular internet marketers as well as established companies that backed us up in this contest and again I’m giving them my biggest appreciation for helping out.

Contest Mechanics

So this contest like I’ve said is a creative writing contest. In order to gain an entry, the blogger/contestant has to write a blog post on his blog about his best blog marketing tip. That certain blog post accounts for 1 entry. Each blogger can submit up to 5 entries all throughout the duration of the contest. There is no rule aside from that the post has to be original, must never have been copied somewhere.

Each entry has to link back to this contest post so I can track all the entries. The link bank can either be in the beginning or at the end of the post. To be uniform with everyone,Ā  you can just copy and paste this line:

This post is an entry to MelvinBlog’s Best Blog Marketing Tip contest where there are $2000 worth of prizes at stake.

There will be 3 winners overall and they are gonna get determined by two factors: quality of posts, and popularity. In terms of quality, I have hired 4 judges who are gonna gracefully judge all the entries. I really like to disclose their names but I was told its better not to. Popularity on the other hand, is just about the no.of retweets and comments. So to increaseĀ  your entries’ popularity, you have to at least give maximum exposure to it (letting it in front for more days means better). Lastly, the criteria is 70 to 30, the higher one goes for quality while the latter is for the popularity.

The popularity factor which is 30%Ā  hinges on few metrics which include the no.of retweets of that certain post and amount of comments. I’d like to point out that the popularity criteria is just 30% because I want to give a fair chance of winning especially to those smaller bloggers.

Just for this mechanics alone, I have created a sample entry located of course on my personal blog. (this is just a sample). You can use it as a reference.

Prizes

A little side note: Like in the previous year’s contest, I don’t want to boast just the value of the prizes based on its financial worth. I’m sure there are a lot of eBooks out there thrown for $1000 and by giving 5 copies, it would already be $5000 worth of prizes in a contest, lols. Fortunately, this is not. Like last year, I tried to gather the best prizes from the best people in this space. So just by looking on who they are you will know what I mean. šŸ˜‰

Retweet Contest

Due to some demands and also taking this advice from some of my blogger friends’, I would be running a totally separate contest on Twitter which is all about marketing this contest through Twitter. So in order to enter the retweet contest all you have to do is retweet this post using the tweetmeme button above or copying this text and pasting it directly to your twitter:

“RT @melvinblog, Best Blog Marketing Contest, win over $2000+ in REAL prizes http://bit.ly/bestblogcontest pls RT “

You can modify the text or do it your own way, just make sure you append the @melvinblog reply so I can easily track all the entries. This small contest would run the same as the main contest and would end after one and a half months so do keep on tweeting. At the end of the duration, 10 lucky entries will be drawn and will receive each of the following:

  • 1 copy of Blogussion Thesis theme package – $46 value
  • 1 copy of Gab Fire Theme – $59 value
  • 1 multi-use package of Themewars premium theme –Ā  $70 value
  • 3 copy of Killer Domains eBook by Daniel Scocco – $51 value
  • 1 copy of Social Media Marketing Book & Youtube Made Simple Video Series courtesy of WebTrafficROI
  • 3 copy of Thirtyday blog eBook by Jimvesting – $60 value

Some Secret Contests

To add another layer of excitement (or confusion, whichever you prefer), I’d like to include some other contests that may go live along the way. Not really secret, but more of short contests within the main contests, that can make this whole thing more exciting and the best is that it gives more opportunity for the participants to win.

So lets say, you don’t have a tip. Still you can join the retweet contest and some secret contests that I am going to throw as well. So what’s the best way not to miss these other exciting hidden contests? Well make sure you’re subscribed to the blog, so you don’t miss anything out. šŸ˜‰

Duration & Other Rules

The contest would run for one a half months and it will end on July 15th 12 am ET. After that date, no more entries will get accepted so make sure you start working on your entries right now. Also please give us 5-7 days max to compute all the stats andĀ  announce the winners (patience is virtue my friend).

Questions, Clarifications, Suggestions?

No contest is perfect, most are faulty especially at the start. If you have anything to ask, clarify, suggest or criticize, feel free to do so in the comment form. Remember that good contests are good not mainly because of the prizes, but also with the participation from the audience like you. šŸ˜‰

I will reserve this space for other rules which I dont have at the moment. But Im sure this comment box will get populated as soon as possible. And that would only be probable, if you start asking questions now. šŸ˜‰

Note: An update and clarification on contest was published here. It also contains the official FAQ

Can You Still Get Traffic By Being Active In Big Blogs?

Can You Still Get Traffic By Being Active In Big Blogs?

by Melvin · May 25, 2010

Before, one of the most effective ways to get your new blog noticed is to comment on as many number of big blogs as possible. Back then it’s not just effective, it’s almost considered as a standard. You are basically going to be considered fool if you’re not utilizing this free traffic technique.

But like anything, as time rolls out quickly, things change so drastically. The once so popular blog commenting on big blogs has somehow declined. Not that people aren’t commenting anymore but these days, you’d rather see bloggers do a guest post, run a contest, focus on writing a series post or do more productive stuffs than by being active in their favorite top blogs.

It’s Not as Effective as What It Used To Be

There are really a ton of other things that aren’t as effective as they used to before. One good example is link exchanges. 5-10 years back, it was like the only method that webmasters use both to drive traffic and increase their rankings in the search engines. That’s why people always say that the pace of an online business is much quicker than the real world ones. This day what you’re using may be still effective, the next day you’re not guaranteed it is still gonna work.

As for being active on top blogs, here are some of the reasons that I see why it has somehow declined as not as good as what it used to be.

  • Poor Quality of Traffic – It doesn’t take a lot to see that most bloggers who comment on those sites do it for the lone sake of commenting. I don’t know but I’m really puzzled why bloggers like Chow allow comments such as “thanks for this interesting post” as it doesn’t really add anything. Most of these bloggers were inferred that they need to comment on 200 blogs a day so they do it as fast as they could.
  • Happy-go trigger audience – This one relates to the first factor. The good reason why no one will notice your comment is because 98% of bloggers don’t really read comments of other people. They just comment and then leave, comment and then leave. Oftentimes they don’t even recognize who have written the posts. For instance everytime I do a guest post, most commenters would comment and not even think the post was a guest writeup by another blogger and not the author.
  • Saturation – its plain common sense. Why does one thing work so well before than today? Because before, the method isn’t abused, its used by a reasonable no.of bloggers. But now that everyone uses it, its really hard to see a return.

</end of rant> Anyways as I was writing this post, I just thought it would be interesting to share with you a little case study on what interacting with big blogs bring to the table for me.

For the past month i have been really trying to become active lurker reader on some of the big blogs in our niche. I had observed what ZK has been doing and basically I gave myself a go. And here’s what I found out (in last months period):

From John Chow’s blog

johnchow trafficFrom Shoemoney’s blog

shoemoney trafficFrom Carl Ocab’s blog

carlocab traffic

And from DailyBlogTips

dailyblogtips trafficIt wasn’t ever massive but it’s a good proof that by being active on other people’s blogs you can still reap some traffic. It would also be interesting to see how different blogs have different visitors and behaviors. For instance Shoemoney’s blog, returned a bounce rate of 39% which is pretty good considering that all audience came from just reading my comment and then clicking my link.

John Chow has sent me the most no.but its hard to determine it since I’ve done a couple of guest post on that site as well. As expected it returned a higher bounce rate since most of the blog’s readers are trigger go-lucky ones.

Carl Ocab’s blog sent me a pretty nice stat to play with. His blog was like in hiatus for three months and to receive that no.of traffic and bounce rate is pretty amazing. DBT on the other hand, had the least new visits % . This means that most of the readers of that site also read my blog as well.

Importance of this

Why am I telling you all of this? You may probably have been scratching your head on whats the importance of this. Two things, first is I love playing with stats. I spend a lot of myĀ  free time with Analytics and analyzing my logs and second is that stats can help you a lot in terms of improving the usability of your blog and eventually driving more traffic. As an old adage says,”the number will always speak for itself”. I’m a huge advocate of that.

So to conclude, yes we can still get good traffic from being an active commentator on those big blogs. But it just does not gonna happen right away, you have to be creative and make sure you’re adding good value to the community and not just being spammy. After all, we’re not just concerned about the quantity, we’re all after the quality as well.

How MelvinBlog Dot Com Really Makes Money

How MelvinBlog Dot Com Really Makes Money

by Melvin · May 10, 2010

make money from blogI got this request from two people and although they are only two people (lols), I thought I would share here with you right now how MelvinBlog Dot Com makes money.

First and foremost, I would first like to clarify that this blog makes very little to no money at all. Initially when I started this blog, I had in mind bloggers like Shoemoney and Carl Ocab and basically told myself that I’m really going to monetize this blog as hard as I could. Eventually it did especially the past few years where it makes a steady three-figure income every month which I thought was amazing considering I’m not really selling anything except ad space and also the fact that the blog isn’t a high traffic one.

Anyways enough schmoozing, today I am going to break down to you how this blog makes money in the past recent years. I may not totally give you the exact figures or the precise time period but I’d try to detail it as possible.

This blog is nowhere close to a high-traffic site but it’s enough for me to make some money out of it and take good care of all the bills. I also think it’s interesting to let people see how this blog makes money considering a lot of blogs who have much bigger traffic than this blog has been having difficulties with monetization. Without further ado, here we go.

Direct Advertising

blog advertising

It’s no secret and by simple observation you can easily see that majority of the money from this blog comes from selling ad spaces directly to advertisers. I sell several advertising which includes the well-known square banners at the sidebar, I also have text links and the premium spot which is the 468X60 banner space. Initially I wasn’t too keen on selling paid reviews but after realizing it’s totally just fine, I decided to give it a go.

I don’t know but I think I really do well with selling my ad spaces in this blog. I usually get sold out and if not, maybe 1-2 ad spaces were left. One reason is that my ad space is really cheap. I know some bloggers who have the same traffic than me yet they’re selling their spaces for like double of my amount. I’ve talked about it in my how to get that blog advertisers post and it’s all about really letting the marketplace decide for the price tag. Getting 4 $10 placement is always better than one $25 placement.

I’m also keen on giving out discounts especially if it’s on a commitment basis or if it’s a bulk package. Not only I get to be able to get sponsors but also it builds that publisher-advertiser relationship over time which is something that most bloggers don’t do.

And lastly yes I use a very awesome plugin called OIO Publisher. For those who do not know, what it basically does is make selling ad space automated. The advertiser purchases an ad, and then the plugin does everything. You don’t need to upload the banner manually, you don’t need to undergo to those long processes that you usually go into when doing it by yourself.

It also does have some other unique features like geo-targeting and stat-tracking in which it emails the advertisers about all the stats, the clicks, ecpm, and all those geeky number stuffs.

If you don’t have it yet, get your copy now. I know I was like having some pride into myself before and said ā€œI’m not gonna jump into this OIO thing.ā€ I was making good money then but upon purchasing, I almost doubled my advertising income alone because of this plugin. $47 is so cheap since you can use it in as many of your sites as possible.

Direct Ad Sales alone pays for my virtual private network hosting bills and some other couple of outsourcing works so maybe it’s not that dead after all.

Affiliate Marketing

affiliate marketing money

Most of you here know that I’m an affiliate marketer primarily running CPA campaigns through Pay-per click and then Facebook so being an affiliate is usually my bread and butter in terms of making money. But then it’s not really something that is related to this blog so I really don’t count it as part of the revenue.

However, I made some money though with some affiliate products I recommend in this blog. On my earlier days I was promoting affiliate networks like Pepperjam Network and Clickbooth which back then was paying $5 and $10 respectively for every referral. I made a lot of money in that since I leveraged the blog’s traffic and my reputation in forums. Do take note that I was making money as well by promoting affiliate offers within the network so I was not just trying to refer people for the sake of making money.

Most commissions nowadays are from the products that I’ve used and recommend here in this blog. Some of them include the 31 day workbook by Darren Rowse, Elegant Themes, Theme Wars, and of course OIO affiliate program which is one of the lucrative programs out there. Again, I promote products that I use and recommend. I would say stay away from promoting stuffs that you haven’t used yourself.

Affiliate program isn’t really the main driving force of this blog but I know some blogs who do really quite well with this business model. One of them is Michael Dunlop of IncomeDiary.com who doesn’t sell ad space. Instead he leverages his traffic by providing tons of free good stuffs and then recommending products to them afterwards. It’s a great business model as well for the blog so you might as well look at that.

Selling my product

selling own products

If you can remember I sold a product last year which was called ā€œMake Money Online Blog Monetizerā€ in which it was my first info product ever. The product was launched for 2 and a half months before pulling it out in the market. I’m not gonna say it’s the best product ever since sliced bread but it did almost raked in a thousand dollars in that period. I know I could’ve done much better had the internship not started killing me back then.

Since then I closed the product down as my goal was really to test the market back then as well as analyze its scalability. Whether I had made $20, $200 or $2000, I would still close the launch for that thing for the same duration of time. Whether it is still going to get launched again or not remains to be seen though.

In the latter part of this year I am looking to release another product so stay tuned for that.

Unorthodox Monetization Ways

unorthodox monetization

I always take blog monetization as a big challenge so I did some unorthodox ways to squeeze money from this blog as well. Ā One of them is through the ā€œput the banner and make money programā€. During the past couple of years it was really kicking. I mean you don’t need traffic, don’t need page rank, all you need is to sign up, and then put those ugly looking banners that are made of frames and tables and then receive your 10 Euros (they were usually paying Euros). Some are on a recurring basis and most are on a one time basis.

I really didn’t get the other side of it, all I knew was it’s another way to make money. I even wrote a post about it on how you can money without any sweat at all.

I also did some paid text links in posts thing where I basically was approached by advertisers saying they want this keyword in this specific post to link on their site or whatnot. Probably it’s an evil tactic but is definitely another good way to make money. The buy sell text links forum in digital point was where I was getting most of my clients.

Finally I also tried my luck with CPM-based advertising where I get paid a dollar or more for a thousand impressions. I was a smart ass so all I did was to leverage social media traffic, setup some rotating IP addresses to view my blog and buy cheap traffic. It was a little profitable thing but then I stopped doing it when I switched with this magazine template.

I still have a couple at the back of my mind but I don’t think it’s good to share those things as well as it may probably harm your blog if you implement it. Anyways do take note too that this is what I’d like to call as ā€œdesperate monetization measuresā€. Like I’ve said, it’s always a challenge for me to make money and so even when people see me as trying too hard to make money, I really don’t mind.

Future Plan

As I’ve said I’m going to release a couple of products down the road this year and test the market for it. Since I started list-building last year, I would try to get something from it as well, try to build relationships and then leverage it by recommending some stuffs to them.

The direct advertising model is going to be here in my blog for at least this year since its making me some really good money although I would try to shy away from it probably starting next year once I start getting a more consistent stream of income from other sources

An interesting note to take as well is on how I myself have turned the focus of this blog from making as much money as possible to actually starting to work more on its personal brand and focusing with relationships instead. Although the blog still makes decent money, most of the goals that I’ve set this year aren’t really on the financial side, rather more on building a larger community towards it and bigger readability all throughout the blogosphere. Money is good, but I’d take growing credibility and expertise any time of the day.

Long post huh? What say you?
