48hourslogo – Small business logo design in just 48 hours!

48hourslogo – Small business logo design in just 48 hours!

by Melvin · Oct 1, 2014

This is a paid post and is written by Rick Mullenix of 48hourslogo.com

48hourslogo.com offers affordable online logo design for small businesses. There is no bigger detractor from businesses than a poor presentation. Everyone not only wants their business to look good, but look professional. This is why logos are so vital – they’re usually the first representation of your business someone will see. First impressions count, and you need to make sure the logo representing you speaks clearly your vision and goals to the viewer. It’s not only true for brick and mortar businesses, but so much more for online businesses.

Logo123.com (a sister site of 48hourslogo) can make sure you get a high quality logo by working with a professional. I’m guessing you’re thinking that it can be pricey, and you’re right. But it doesn’t have to be. You’re probably aware of different ways to get designs online. They have their pros and cons, each doing business a different way. For overall quality, value, and timeliness, I recommend checking out this site.

What is 48hourslogo?

MB_48hourslogo LogoStarted in 2010 by a group of freelance designers, they had tried and seen the emerging crowdsourcing model with its benefits and flaws. With this new website, they improved upon the model with some unique twists, enabling budding entrepreneurs to better connect with experienced graphic designers. The way they handle crowdsourcing logo designs attracted designers from all over the world. To date, over fifteen thousand small business owners and entrepreneurs have taken advantage of this logo design service.

When starting a project, you will fill out a brief form and create a business owner account. The form has room for you to be thorough or brief, sharing information about your business name and nature, styles you are interested in, your audience, ideas and concepts you have, and any sample images you would like to reference. After that there are options to set your contest prize amount (minimum $99), making your contest Private or Featured, and adding some Participation Pay to reward participants (it adds a little incentive).

Once that is all decided, set your time (minimum 48 hours) and your contest will be live! Within hours you will begin to receive submission to consider. Rate designs and give feedback on changes you would like to see. Once the time is up, you can select Finalists to further tweak the designs, or select a winner. Once the contest is complete and the Logo Package confirmed, you completely own the rights to your new design.

Why Try 48hourslogo?

There are three major benefits I would like to mention. First, if you are hesitant to try them out, a contest can be started for just $29 down. This will allow you to see what submissions will come in and decide if you would like to finish the contest and pay the prize money. We are that confident that you will be impressed with our Design Community.

Which brings me to my second point: our Design Community is hand picked. We don’t allow just anyone with vector editing software to join. They are proven creatives, so you are ensured to receive more high quality logo designs to your contest.

Finally, our logo contests are all blind. This means that during the first stage, before you select any Finalists, the logo designers cannot see one another’s work. The result is that you will get more original ideas to consider, not copies and variations of your top ranked picks.

If you are small business needing a logo, I encourage you to come try out what thousands of entrepreneurs worldwide have discovered. Quality logo design doesn’t have to be expensive. You can find original and creative ideas for your business through 48hourslogo.com.

Cost Vs Quality: Do Not Skimp On These Elements for an Excellent Website Design

by Melvin · Aug 31, 2014

This is a guest post by Charlie Brown.

Any sensible entrepreneur wants to squeeze a dollar out a dime because after all, you are out there to make money, right? You need to be able to get the best quality of products and services for your business at the lowest possible price in order to make any kind of profit.

While that is good business sense, it can sometimes be taken too far. There are areas where quality can be compromised because of cost (not recommended but understood) and there are other areas where you money should not be an object. One of these areas is web design.

Your website, in fact, every one of your web pages is the face of your business to the world. Potential investors and clients will get a feel for who you are and what you are about from how your website looks and functions, and of course the content it has. So you really must put your best foot forward here and spend as much as you can on good quality web design.

There are certain irreducible minimums when it comes to the elements on your website and these are the things that you should concentrate on when requesting for web development. That way, you don’t go over budget but still get great quality work done.

The first thing you need to do is ensure that your website has good hosting. You do not need to be on a server that has anything less than 99% uptime. In addition, the company should have great technical support and customer service to help you navigate around technical issues efficiently. Make sure to compare prices here as well and ask around for a recommendation before you settle on one. Your web designer should also have some ideas on a good hosting site.

Next is to have a beautiful home page. This is the face of your business and should be made to look perfect for your kind of business and target demographic. Your home page’s design and function will go a long way in building your reputation for professionalism, relevance, excellence and a host of other factors, so make it count. The same level of quality should be reflected on the rest of the web pages as well.

You should ensure that your website is user-friendly. This refers both to you and to your visitors. It should be designed in an organized manner and be easy to navigate so that the visitors can be led through the site to the product or service desired and eventually make a decision on it. Don’t make it cluttered or complicated; just clear and simple. You should also be able to make necessary changes and updates without calling your web developer all the time so ask for a good content management system with your website.

It is also important to have a clear call to action on all your pages. Make sure each page directs the visitors to doing something regarding what they have just read and seen. This simple function will ensure that your website is successful and that your business will also be successful.

Blog Design Update for 2014

by Melvin · May 18, 2014

I hinted at a blog design makeover in my previous blog post and here it is now. Unfortunately, it’s not 100% complete yet and because the current blog theme during the time looked more messed up while this is being cooked up, I decided making this new design live is a reasonable decision rather than continuing with a messed up theme.

There will still be lots of changes that is going to happen over the next few weeks and months however in terms of the layout and structure, this will be it. 🙂 As you can see it is simpler and cleaner than ever and with less elements to be distracted about. I will still run ads as they come but it will not be in the same quantity as it used to before.

Finally, I am still feeling my way on the things that I can do with the new template which by the way is from Genesis of Studiopress still. As hinted on the temporary header, I would like to make the design more picture-oriented. Not that I would start posting pictures solely and forget about writing text, but I’d like to see if I can add something more “artistic” and “creative” to the way I do things and by that I mean running this personal blog. I also don’t have a logo yet considering the old one simply can’t be transferred here. I also wanted a new logo to refresh things up and I’m fortunate to tap the services of a talented graphics designer which happened to be my friend. I’m excited!

As always, let me know what you think and what I can improve more in the design. I will be writing a full blog post on the blog redesign once it’s completed and I’ll go in-depth on what the changes mean to me and to you as my reader.

Looking for a New Theme for Redesign 5.0

by Melvin · May 9, 2014

This blog has undergone 4 design changes since it was started in 2009. It’s amazing how each of the blog designs are so different from each other and have different focus. And contrary to what people think when I made these changes, countless hours were actually spent in planning and tweaking the design to make sure they fit in based on how I envision it.

Of course a lot has changed since the last redesign. First is me reverting back to casual posting without any more focus on making money and growing my readership. Second is me leaning towards a simple, even ‘old school’ blog template. No interest in magazine themes anymore, nor do I want carousels and all those fancy stuff that just increase load time. All I want is a theme that features my writing and rambling. Nothing more, nothing less.

With that being said, I am probably sticking to Studiopress as they have some of the best ‘simple and clean’ themes available around. In fact the current design which is called ‘eleven 40’ is still great but since it’s been running this same theme for more than 2 years now, I decided that a change is inevitable.

Well, let’s just say that the theme-searching and overall design planning starts now. Do you have any Studiopress theme that you can suggest to me? Or even no Studiopress theme would also work fine if I happen to like the theme. Feel free to share what you think in the comment form below

What Makes a Good Blog Logo?

by Melvin · Mar 11, 2012

I talked about logo designs in the past and how vital it is for bloggers to have some unique logo that would somehow express their brand in the internet. This doesn’t just apply to niche bloggers but applies to every blogger out there. Most of the people that I know have their own customized logo even though they’re not really ‘in the game’ of fame and making money. That said, its almost impossible to have a blog without a logo these days.

In my previous post, I mentioned the recent design overhaul in this blog but I have not really mentioned the logo change that was made. Actually, the current logo right now is still not complete and in fact, it was drafted by me really. 🙂 However, its easy to take note that the incomplete logo change was very far from the cartoonish ones that I have used in the past.

Logo Simplicity

Right now I am striving for simplicity in logo. I understand that simplicity can somehow overlap with dullness but then, either way people will think either way and it largely depends on their background and who they are. And as mentioned above, I would be moving away from using cartoonish logos and might even just prefer a text-based logo.

A good designer named David Airey has produced some of the best yet simplest logo that I’ve seen and you can look at his portfolio to know what I’m talking about.

Simplicity perhaps is the key and this is where everything begins. Other factors like logo flexibility, timeliness are also definitely important but that comes after the first factor.

New MelvinBlog Logo

As mentioned I don’t still have the time and idea in regards to the new logo for this blog. Perhaps it might not even be a priority at all for me. But whenever it becomes, I feel like the next logo is going to be the last logo that shall be used in this blog. 🙂

Right now I still have to decide whether I would like it to be strictly text-based or incorporate some logo along with text for better branding. And so far, the only idea that comes to mind when it comes to this is the doshdosh logo. Or perhaps not. However, one sure thing is that I would like my next logo to have that kind of concept (simple small logo, then text). For me, that’s what makes a good blog logo.

What do you think?

The Death of Complex Blog Designs (& My Own Redesign)

by Melvin · Mar 4, 2012

When I started being aware of blogs, most of the blogs at the time were pretty much sporting a generic design. The simple blog layout was usually just a 2 column layout, a simple header, simple footer and dull colors. Of course I just followed the herd and had those design on my blogs.

Now as time passed by, more and more blog design companies introduced more flexible yet complex themes.  All of a sudden all normal blogs started sporting the ‘magazine’ look and I was one of them of course. 😉 The simple 2 column layout became obsolete quickly and multiple sidebars, multi subheaders and footers started becoming the ‘in thing’. And based on the past designs of this blog, you can see that I was very much following the trend.

MelvinBlog 4.0

Even though I’ve been mostly using magazine style themes, I’m a big fan of simple blog designs such as DailyBlogTips and DoshDosh (which is dead nowadays). I always thought like their blog loads in no time and that its very very pleasing in the eyes. And thus, it encouraged me to find a simpler design and finally move away from the magazine style template.

Now you can argue that my current design may still not be the ‘simplest’ of all however you can easily see that this design moves far away from the previous designs where I had fancy sliders, colorful images, thumbnails and etc. Instead, this design just focuses on content and nothing else. The readability, spacing is definitely much better and the elements can breathe easier based on how the theme is designed. And while I still have 2 sidebars, the widgets that I have utilized is much lesser than the past designs. And lastly I cut down on redundancy by eliminating stuff that are pretty much just wasting the space.

Now using StudioPress Framework

And if you’re wondering what theme it is, then the answer is its StudioPress. In the past designs I mostly pick themes that are not so mainstream. The past theme was from someone in ThemeForest and while I like it, its clear that its pretty hard to expand from the theme itself due to that there’s really not much people behind it.

With StudioPress, you’re talking about the flexible framework but you’re also after the interactive support from the community. I’m sure its still going to take me some time to understand features such as hooks but they’re definitely not lacking on resources on how to help users like me understand it. So all in all I’m happy so far with my transition to the StudioPress Framework and thus I would highly recommend you to at least take a look at them.

Death of Complex Designs.

Now getting back to the death of complex flashy blog designs, I would say that most bloggers in this space have moved into a more simple approach as well. Shoemoney’s blog has been much cleaner now and loads a ton quicker as well. John Chow who has been notorious for plastering his blog with as much stuff as possible has also decided to cut down more. I have a lot on the list but you should find out yourself that blogs these days seem to be getting back more on basic designs with basic layout and stuff.  Or perhaps is it just in this industry?

Perhaps this has also something to do with the decline of the ‘meta-blogging’ (blogging about blogging, blogging about making money blogging) trend. The strength of meta-blogging mostly hinges through advertising money, affiliate referral, and product sales in general and when you’re talking about those things, you’re talking about putting more and more ‘clutter’ to your blog one way or another. Its like the ‘more banners the better chance I can make money’ kind of thinking. And now that its dead, bloggers are quickly moving away from all the clutter by either changing their approach or just simply forgetting about blogging for money.

And therefore, what used to be “dull” seems to be the cool thing again these days. What say you?

Joidiamonds – The Company Behind my Twitter Background

Joidiamonds – The Company Behind my Twitter Background

by Melvin · Oct 17, 2010

So I was about to post this a month back but I was too occupied with some of the other  things that I have to do first. But now the time has come to talk about it.

A lot of people have asked me who’s behind my slick twitter background that I released about 2 months back. And in today’s post I intend to talk about him her. OK so the company behind my twitter background is Joidiamonds. Joidiamonds is a one girl designing company that is situated in Atlanta, Georgia. She does almost every kind of design work such as Twitter layouts, WordPress Designs, logos, headers, banners, business cards and whatever you could possibly think of.

Speaking of business card, she’s also the one assigned to make that one for me and I’m currently collaborating with her with regards to it.  Just in case you’re curious what her name is, it’s Crystal. 😉

Going back to my twitter design, just in case you haven’t seen it yet, it looks like this (click the image for a larger view):

melvinblog twitter background

Don’t mind my face in the right side. 😉 It’s totally my idea, lols. Anyway Crystal has been really really approachable as far as the design is concern. I think it took us about one month to complete it due to the fact that we’re both busy and I’ve been really not giving my instructions clearly so it’s my fault. But nevertheless we were able to get it done.

You could also follow Joidiamonds on Twitter because she occasionally gives out discounts so that is something that you may want to take advantage of.

All in all if you’re looking for a premium design and you don’t want to shred hundreds of dollars only to be surprised that there are just limited number of revisions, then you may want to check Joidiamonds as one of the options. I would definitely recommend her services for these types of design. What say you?
