Blogging And Facebook

by Melvin · Jul 19, 2009

Ok, we all know that (probably) all people who are aware that the internet exists do have their own facebook accounts. But not all are concerned on having their own blog. I’m all fine with that as I really don’t recommend blogging to everyone and it depends on one’s interest whether to enjoy it or not. Although blogging and facebook (alongside Twitter) seemed to be somehow connected with each other, we can all agree that both can be time-waster’s as well. Here’s my take on their advantages and disadvantages:

ADVANTAGE

The good advantage of having a facebook account and an own blog is that it already sets your own stage online. It gives exposure to who you are and what you do best. Some may think its retarded but the truth is when you meet people or when you are applying for a job or a position, a company will always do a Google search for your name to see who you really are, yep its so true! Having both accounts (or even just one) is already a big plus if you’re trying to carve out an online reputation for yourself (or even just a personal brand).

DISADVANTAGE

Ok, like the ones we’ve talked about lurking in forums a couple of weeks ago, both can also waste your time. Most people that have their own blog and do online business would waste it by ‘blog-hopping’ or maybe by caring too much about the looks, designs and metrics of it. While facebook on the other hand has a ton of applications/games embedded into it that could mesmerize one, hence it’s easy to get distracted, just enjoy it and neglect other responsibilities. Those who don’t have an online biz or stuffs can also ‘lurk’ in facebook too much (w/c is harmful as well). I have talked with a lot of my friends and they shared to me that facebook takes 90% of their time in the internet (by playing third-party games and taking stupid quizzes and stuffs). I really don’t have anything against it but if you’re a student or someone who does something , then probably you can be better doing your own stuff. Oh well, maybe just my 2 cents.

As for every online property, entity or whatever, they have their own disadvantage for their use. Sure facebook is fun and so is blogging but at the end, it’s not really hard to figure out whether either of them is hurting your productivity. Or maybe its just me. If you agree w/me then add me on Facebook. πŸ˜€

    Hello Melvin,
Thanks for dropping by my site.
That is where I first met you, so to speak.
It is nice that you clarify the usability of Facebook for a blogger, or just for anyone that is interested in seeing Facebook for what it is; a platform for networking.
Like much anything else online – the activity of the experience is measured by what you choose to take out of it, and what may be a time waster for one, may not be for another.
I think both(blogging and Facebook) suit their purpose one way or another.
What counts is the experience of the user, and how they choose to interpret that moment.
I’m happy to have stopped by.
    Have a happy weekend. πŸ™‚
    Kind Wishes

Great clarification. Honestly I never thought of that when writing this post, but I do agree with it.

One good rule I follow whenever I go online is to always do the priorities first before checking in my Facebook. Otherwise, my complet time would be wasted. I’m easily distracted with facebook, the quizzes, the chats, the updates, games, everything. So I make sure not to log in to facebook unless I’m relaly done with what’s important πŸ˜‰

It’s like an addiction. If a person cannot control his addiction w/something, then he might as well just refrain from doing it. But again its easier said than done. πŸ™‚

I well written post. I don’t have a Facebook account and it’s purely for personal reasons. I know many people who are obsessed with Facebook and try and spend as much time changing and updating settings, etc. I would rather use that time on my blog and be constructive and something that I can be proud of.

I guess it depends on the individual πŸ™‚

It really depends on the individual – if he wishes to spend more time on FB or his blog – vice versa

I Would rather spend on my blog / online business

The only reason I am keeping my myspace page is because I like its blogging feature, but if I could find a clean, effective, reliable blogging application on Facebook that allowed comments from readers, I could move it over there.

I don’t know about twitter and myspace. I know about facebook. On facebook you can make fan pages or groups. By the help of groups and fan pages you can advertise your site on facebook. You can also contact facebook for facebook ads.

You are right, FB has its advantages and disadvantages. For me, it is quite a good avenue to find long lost friends and be updated and get updates with family and friends. But if you are trying to make money online with your blogs I think your priority should be with your blog. It brings in cash, in the first place. πŸ™‚ So, what I normally do is open FB last thing unless I have to upload some video for my family or friends which is not very often. I just leave it uploading videos while I do my work at home.

I wrote a new LiveJournal blog post about 20 minutes ago, and have Facebook set up to import my blog posts. It’s already imported all my old ones; how long does it take for Facebook to check for new blog posts…

Facebook isn’t exactly any safer if you don’t go through the precautions to only allow certain people to see your profile, but I prefer Facebook anyway because it’s cleaner, although with all these new add-ons they seem to be making it’s starting to get more obnoxious.

I feel that facebook is safe…. however this is probably because I got facebook when it was too and only college students could join (you needed a student email).

However, facebook and myspace are both safe if you are careful about them. Don’t put up personal information and don’t try to meet strangers over them and you should be fine.

How does it match the contacts in your phone with your friends on facebook? Some of my friends pics showed up in my contacts but others did not. So does it match phone numbers, names, or email?

facebook can be really addicting, but its a way to relax after a long day of work, its enjoyable just logging in and checking on your friends and taking those silly quizzes. Its a good way to end your day.

I guess its hard to summerize it better that you did. Short & precise, just the way I like it. Another thing, your factual style, I found it worth spending few minutes on & would certainly help newbies.
