Site Flipping Or Affiliate Marketing

by Melvin · Mar 22, 2009

A lot of people in the blogging community usually want to learn either how to make money with affiliate marketing or how to start earning through flipping websites/blogs. Although its not your usual mano-a mano type of matchup, it still makes sense to tackle both.  So today I thought its interesting to tackle both and get your opinion about it.

Affiliate Marketing

Everyone in the building knows how much I love affiliate marketing. Not because I  make hundreds to thousands (most of the times, I’m even losing more than profiting 🙂 ), but because I just enjoy the whole process. I love the landing page thing, the PPC manipulation marketing stuff and the affiliate promotion overall. Although I haven’t been active with affiliate marketing this year (because of college), its still something I see myself doing in the future.

I’m not going to detail how aff.marketing works but basically its like promoting an offer and getting paid for driving leads/sales. Most affiliate marketing asshoes in the industry can be found on the bloody wickedfire forum and some of them are making five figures from affiliate marketing. If done properly, I can say affiliate marketing is the one and only business model that can go on autopilot (yes, money while sleeping!)

Site Flipping

Site flipping is something I haven’t done. Although through the years we’ve sold some really good websites, we really never considered it as site flipping. Flipping Blog and websites is easier than affiliate marketing in my opinion but the niche is as saturated as the latter. Some people really do good in it, and some people are happy to do it as a hobby.

What is site flipping? It’s simple as making a website or blog and then selling it. The idea here is creating a unique something and convincing the marketplace that, that “something” has a high potential and could yield income if marketed properly. Although, its not as automated as affiliate marketing, flipping people websites is a lot easier to do than the former. Another fact is that there is low risk and low cost in it. If the site doesn’t sell, you still have a lot of options with it.

Your Choice?

For the first time in this blog I will hold a poll. And its a poll about the two stuffs discussed above. What do you think is better overall? Affiliate Marketing Or Buying (or creating) And Selling Websites? Or maybe you can share your thoughts and add something to what has been discussed.

I voted for affiliate marketing. When you’re flipping sites, it’s a one-off proposition. If you set up a good affiliate strategy for a project with some “set and forget” traffic, it keeps paying indefinitely.

yep but then in affiliate marketing, if you dont have a good affiliate strategy (which brings poor conversion of course), then more likely its easier to lose money

I have tried site flipping but didn’t succeed much of it. Sometimes, I find it hard to sell the site. I really want to try affiliate marketing but I can’t do PPC yet.

I want to go for Affiliate Marketing. I will rather do domain marketing than site flipping. I am a Little too honest and I think Site Flipping do not suit me.

I may change my mind and try site flipping as well.

I would prefer Site Flipping Because It’s easy and I have experience in it. I have not much experience in affiliate marketing. But if we are much experienced in it I know that there is lots of probability of making lots of money even more than Site Flipping.

I chose none. Both are great ways to make money online and both relies on each other.

Look at it this way. Site flipper sells affiliate sites to affiliate marketers to promote. Affiliate marketers thus created a demand for sites. And this increases the opportunities for site flippers.

If there’s no affiliate marketing, there’s no site flipping. If there’s no site flipping (means no sites to buy), affiliate marketing will not be as popular as today and the resulting effects may be lower payouts from companies.

I’ve done both. Affiliate marketing is about slow, smart way to make money. Site flipping is fast, repetitive way to make money.

I voted for affiliate marketing. So far I have made more money flipping websites and domains than affiliate marketing but overall I see affiliate marketing far better than website flipping. Website flipping you get paid with each sell. Affiliate marketing is more steady, you can make money on a daily bases.

@ Desmond: Thats not true. You can easily do site flipping without affiliate. You can flip a blog which is not based on money making. Sell a forum. Sell a Directory. All are site flipping only.

Site flipping of affiliate connected sites only give you more earning.

There isn’t ever an easy way of making money, it all takes time and hard work. Why not do both affiliate marketing and site flipping? It doesn’t hurt to have two sources of revenue to not only gauge your success, but also to increase your bottom line as much as possible.

I suggest that if you want a stable surge of income, go and flip websites. This can be your money-making machine that will bring you to financial freedom.

Internet Marketing all the way for me! I’d much rather have sites I know something about and can relate to.. Seems like with flipping it’s CONSTANT research on things you may have no clue about..

i do know some folks that do very well flipping sites though!

I prefer flipping websites because there is an end to the means. You create a blog, add design, add content, and get it ready for monetization. Then you sell. Once sold – you’re done.

Well unless you upsell content, hosting, design services, etc. But as far as blogging and all that jazz – you’re done!

I choose flipping sites over affiliate marketing if i had to, but i don’t. That’s the good thing – we can do both.

    Interesting topic 🙂
My opinion is do both, why limit yourself to just one! Unless ofcours you are newbie then I suggest starting with the one you are most passionate about and build from there..

I started off with affiliate marketing and have recently moved on to site/blog flipping. The best way to start with this is get yourself a reseller acount like at heartinternet and start build a potfolio. Since you have control of the domain names as well as hosting not only do you make money on the flip, you earn recuring income for each year the customer renews their domain and hosting with you 😉

I will take affiliate marketing any day over flipping sites. Affiliate marketing all you have to do is make one website and get good readership and you make a killing with affiliate marketing. You just have to be smart… whereas site flipping takes to much time.
