What I Think About Comments

by Melvin · Jun 26, 2008

Another busy week for me. I had to rush everything because I feel so behind with all the projects that we we’re doing and the affiliate products this month had a pretty bad ROI and some mistakes about Adwords. This month by far is the worst month as far as affiliate marketing is concern. So now I am going to share with you what I think about Comments.

As you can see, my blog has been getting some decent number of comments (even though the form was all white before). But what many people do not know is that comments are not usually like the number shown. Oftentimes I reply two to three times to other comments so to say I got 6 comments on a post, the real number only is three. So being a blogger for not so long time I have seen comments that are pretty ugly. Many are just lame, Some look spammy, and few make sense. I don’t really have anything against those comments in fact I am even accepting comments that contain 2-4 words only. But of course I don’t tolerate trolls.

So what about the comments? Most of the time people are forgetting that the real value of comments reflect on the person and/or site itself. Let’s say about 85% of your comments say “nice post”. The common effect here is that you just comment because you want to get commented to and that’s awful! Most bloggers will see it and despise it. And because they don’t like it, the IMAGE of your blog will not be good to those 85% of the blogs you commented! Maybe for others, it’s ok but I’m sure a large percentage will not like it. You are giving your blog a bad name around the blogoshpere. Sure it’s not wrong to say “nice post” but if you do it all the time, then wtf! I see a lot of blogs these days complaining about lame comments and this is just a message that I want to get across everyone. Comments = Your Blog = You!

How about you? Have you established a great presence in the blogging world because of you adding value to other blogs? I want to get your view about this.

A major part of my launch strategy for my new blog has been commenting on other people blogs. What I have found is that the more helpful I am with my comment – the more people who will click through to my blog.

People can tell when you are posting a comment just to receive a link and possibly some traffic.

My blog gets a lot of short comments too. You can always tell the commentators who just want a link as their comments are short and sometimes have nothing to do with the post itself.

There’s not much you can do though. This is a tactic that a lot of young bloggers use. they believe they will get lots of traffic by doing this. Heck, many of these bloggers even write guides on it and recommend blogs you should comment on to get traffic (ie. the whole nofollow brigade).

I like to think that good articles promote good comments but unfortunately, it isn’t always the case.

Most of my comments are purely my opinion about what I read, but I don’t think there is anything wrong with telling the blogger that you liked his post.

for me, i always try to give comments with sense. i agree on the point that whatever you post as comments will reflect your personality. so it must be taken care of.

well those “nice posts” people just wanna intro them to you or have to show there link or maybe a spammer too 😉 but for me comments are some personal opinions 😀

    Nice post lol

I think that comments like nice posts etc are o.k
because say I wrote something and some one liked it
then he wont be always able to express his opinions or maybe his opinions match with me
so he can just write nice post or I enjoyed the read 😀

@siddhart, actually i didn’t say that it’s bad. I’m not against it either. What I want to say is that when people start comments that do not add value then this is what’s harmful to them.

Good point. If one gives a lame comment, it reflects badly upon his blog.

I guess some comment on blogs only to get to the Top Commentators list.

I too just wrote a post on blog commenting as I also feel it’s very important to be a good guest/visitor when stopping by someone else’s blog. I agree it’s a great tool for traffic to your own site … in exchange for that “free” traffic I feel it’s polite and wise to actually ADD to the post whenever possible. Many of us frequent “learning” blogs so it’s important to thank the blogger for their free infomation and it’s good to help teach others through the web 2.0 venue where we can freely exchange information. When blog commenting I feel you should:

Say Thank You, Mention What You’ve Learned, Expand On the Topic, Comment on the Correct Post, Reference Something That’s In the Post, Add Helpful Information, Use Your Manners, Ask Questions About the Topic, Subscribe To the Comment …

I think commenters who leave short unless comments are just reflecting on there own personality, but were somewhat influenced by the blog’s content to say something. Like most people just read your stuff and don’t say anything at all. So its nice to have people say “nice post” to make you feel like you help somebody out, you know.

Melvin doesn’t drone about anything. He just writes what he thinks. Anyway, back to his post. In his recent post Melvin has written what he thinks about comments. Worth reading. […]
