BloggingTips.com Is For Sale, BIN is $60k+

by Melvin · Dec 23, 2009

So I was bloghopping (does this term really exist?) today and have noticed that one of the bigger blog known as BloggingTips.com is for sale. If you don’t know ( I doubt it), Blogging Tips has been in the blogosphere for quite some time. I watched how it grew, how it used to have a superman logo and how it has a ton of writers now. Again like I always say, it’s sad when you hear people selling their blogs.

Anyways, the auction can be found here and Kevin, the owner is looking for a minimum of $60,000. The blog is an established blog and really one of my favorite reads when talking about blogging. It’s also ad-free I believe and has a good interactive forum (most blogs don’t have). And of course you can add the premium domain where the blog lies in.

Know what? What I don’t like when seeing blogs get sold is the fact that the new owner usually sucks. We’ve seen a lot of good blogs that are turned to so-so blogs when ownership changes and if Blogging Tips gets sold, I do hope its not the case. Either way, good luck to Mr. Muldoon.

If only I could have that kind of blog to sell :).

Kidding. I don’t see the point of selling blog. Blog is not an ordinary website, it’s different, it’s a way to express opinions, not just boring facts and loads of data/info.

Thanks for the well wishing Melvin, it’s much appreciated πŸ™‚

I will miss writing for the site as I have a great readership there however selling the site will free up time to allow me to work on different things online. The cash will also help me with purchasing a house I want (there are so many bargains just now because of the recession!).

If I do sell the site, I’m sure I will still do the odd post around the blogosphere from time to time. So no doubt you’ll still see me somewhere haha.

    Thanks again πŸ™‚

I agree with you with personal related blogs. I update my personal blog when I can. The aim is not to make money, I just enjoy updating it.

BloggingTips is an ordinary website from a business point of view. From day one I have planned, updated and invested in the blog as if it was a business, and in that respect it’s no different from any other website on the web.

I’m self employed through he internet so I simply couldn’t invest the time I did into a site such as BloggingTips if there was no return in the present or in the future.

p.s. I agree that with the rest of you. Hopefully any new owner will take the site and continue to progress it. Nothing worse that seeing someone buy a good blog then letting it die off.

60K, high price. I am little doubt full about the price. I do not think anyone will buy it for 60K unless he/she is either dumb or a very confident marketer/blogger.

It will be fun to see how the auction goes.

In my own opinion, selling a blog that already age is a bad idea. It’s hard to earn the traffic that you already earn for the past years and months. It will generate a good income already.

Nah, if he does it for a reason maybe it would be better.

    Erm, you sure about that?

BloggingTips is one of the best blogging tips websites out there, and that’s saying something seeing as there are probably thousands scattered around the web.

As well as that, there’s a highly active forum, which has huge potential for massive earnings.

The site already earns, as well as having a unique design and thousands of unique, high quality articles.

To be honest, $60k seems like a bargain. OK, it’s a bit much for me as a 16 year old, but if I had the money it’s definately a website I’d seriously be considering investing in.

Good luck with the sale, Kevin. You’ve done a truly awesome job on the site, and I hope you get a good price from an owner which will do an equally great job! πŸ˜€

    Thanks Morrell.

Well I do still write for the site every week. The post I wrote last week listing 75 wordpress themes took about 6 hours to write.

It does take time to manage writers, make sure that they are paid on time, make sure they don’t have any problems. I also have to respond to guest writers, advertisers and other bloggers etc. And I have spent a lot of time working with designers in order to release themes.

It’s not a lot of time, but it does all add up during the week. I do enjoy writing for the site though, it doesn’t feel like a chore. The main reason I am selling is to get funds though I have several ideas for new websites which I will be able to devote 100% of my time to if I sell BloggingTips.

I agree that 60k is a bargain. I’m actually expecting more. The site has a great future, earns a few thousand every month just now and has the potential to earn someone a lot more in the future.

I think it’s fair for someone to comopare this to a normal website. Blogs take much longer to get traffic and to build a readership but once you have it, you are in a great position to promote related products and services.

Wow! If he can fetch $60k, that would really rock my world. Thanks for giving us this update… I wouldn’t have known otherwise. Personally, I never thought that this blog was established enough to call itself for more than $50k. Just a small correction: a BIN price is typically more of a “maximum” than a “minimum of $60k” as you mentioned… slip of the tongue?

    Merry Christmas!

@kevin yea I really agree. I think just from the start where you bought that good domain, from the time where you purchased those paid reviews, then the premium designs as well, it’s obvious that really BloggingTips is a big investment/project in your part.

Anyways I guess we absolutely have no control to whether the new owner could live up or just the let blog die. I had favorite blogs/sites that went the other way when the ownership changed and as a reader it really sucks to witness the downfall.

Kevin, you are right, it is a shame when these big sites go up for sale. The new owner will never have the emotional attachment that the original owner had, and will always struggle to maintain the same ‘feel’ to the site.

But I guess that is just the way blogs are going. Once they become valuable their owners can realise some cash to move on to do bigger and better things. It also makes a bit of room for the rest of us to try and jump into the gap!

I have written for Kevin at BloggingTips.com and will continue to do so. I hope he makes everything he can get. This is the American way people. Kevin has worked hard to make his blog successful and he should profit from that effort. This is the new economy and he deserves it. I’m sure there have been many hours of hard work and sacrifice to make his blog a success. Good luck Kevin! You deserve to profit from your efforts!

I used to write for blogging tips as a paid blogger and I don’t think it is sad that the site is for sale. When a site reaches a level where it can be sold for that amount of real-world cash that is a great accomplishment. And, although I could never afford that kind of investment, I would almost say it is worth more.

…and now that I’ve taken time to read the other comments before posting, why don’t I just second Bob’s notion?

It’s a good time to exit I would say now that the market is slowly picking up. It’s an awesome blog with real blogging tips.

However, 60K (not from my affordability point of view) is really high for the kind of traffic it receives and conversion. I would say 15K would be a good price in the current market. It would have gone for say 25K 15-20 months ago.

(This is assuming a 5x income multiple. Also I see that it operates on a link sales model for revenue – linkxl, textlinkads, paid reviews etc. The takeover success also depends on how easily the buyer can get 5-6 good writers)

I’m not selling bloggingtips according to the money it earns. You can tell that by the fact there are no ads on bloggingtips. The site is a platform to release related products – themes, ebooks and other related sites.

If I don’t get anywhere close to my reserve I will simply keep it. To be honest, I’d like to keep it, it was only the need for some funds which forced me to list it. If it’s not sold over the next few weeks I will happily keep it and develop it more over the next few years. πŸ™‚

No need to thank me. I appreciate that many people will value the site differently from me. The site is valued higher than it’s current income because the site is very under monetized. I may ad advertisements back in the future to increase monthly income. However, the site has been developed mainly as a platform to launch other sites (such as my theme store blog themes club). I am also looking into launching a blog advertising website and will step that up should I not sell the site.

That’s a waste to see Kevin sell his blog, but good news is that the blog has not been sold with the BIN price. $60k was slightly high for the traffic and earning it had, but I can see the potential of the blog.

The domain name itself costs a few thousand. I believe that Kevin can earn more than that if he keeps the blog and develop it.

*Kevin, keep it and develop it as we want more blogging tips from you. No one wants to see the new owner ruins your blog.

    All the best!
