Premium Themes OR Custom Themes?

by Melvin · Dec 12, 2009

Bloggers at certain point in time usually decide eventually that they would start using a paid theme. The problem that bothers them the most is whether they should use a premium theme or a completely customized theme. In this brief post I would discuss to you the two briefly including their advantage and disadvantage.

PREMIUM THEMES

Premium themes are themes you usually pay for. Obviously the quality of these themes are way ahead of free themes and the benefits that you’d receive from using it is just too much.

The cost of a single use license is very cheap either, ranging from $20 to couple hundreds of dollars. If you ask me its a great deal because for some couple of dollars you get yourself a good theme, and you set yourself apart from other millions of bloggers who use “cookie-cutter” free themes. Also with premium themes, you can pretty much expect the coding to be clean enough to maximize every possible potential for the blog.

Another thing to add is the support forums. Most, if not all, premium themes services come with lifetime support which includes access to tutorials and the forum. For me this is really crucial since working with your newly purchased premium design could be tough especially if you’re not techy enough to handle all the mind-boggling stuffs. One reason why the Thesis theme is soooo popular and well-loved is because of its excellent support enabling users to really make the most of what they paid.

Obviously the main disadvantage of Premium themes is that you really don’t get to look that much different from the rest of the users of the same theme. Yes, you can change the headers, colors, fonts designs or whatever but at the end of the day, you’re still using the same theme with 100 others. But heck that should not be that big of a factor when considering this type of theme! Here’s a short list of the popular Premium themes services:

  • Thesis Theme
  • WooThemes
  • Ultimate Blogging Theme
  • StudioPress
  • Themewars (my theme! 😉 )

CUSTOM THEMES

Customized themes are themes that are unique, meaning no one can have that same look, layout or whatever. The quality of these themes is never in question (debatable) and it’s certainly the type of theme you could use if you have big money to spend.

That being said, to get a custom theme you need to have $1000 upwards. Obviously what you’re going to get is more than just the “premium” and you’d feel super special knowing not any single blogger sports the same theme. 🙂

There are several disadvantages that in my opinion the custom themes have. First is limited support. Most custom theme companies just have a limited number of revisions (mostly 3 revs). So in case you communicated poorly with them then its a big problem for your part when you couldnt seem to get what you want from them. And since different companies have different coding conventions, it can really be tough to do the dirty work yourself.

And another is the tough decision on choosing what company to hire. Most people find themselves trapped on choosing a cheap untested company to design their own only to find out that the work completely sucked. It usually is a big problem because most people want to have custom looks for their blogs YET don’t have that budget so they end up paying for a cheap (crap) company. Anyhow no worries, I already did the research for you for the top ones in this category

  • Unique Blog Designs
  • Cre8d Designs
  • Soap Design
  • BeersDesign
  • Guerilla

Conclusion

It’s a cliche statement, but it all depends on what you really need and what your goals are (and how much you can spend). Most people use (custom) designs to springboard themselves to fame while others let content speak for it.

I’m biased but obviously I would pick Premium over custom simply because you can do so much things that can match what a custom theme does for a very reasonable price. Support also does it because you don’t need to guess, most of what you want is laid out in there and that’s something  a custom theme NEVER does have.

Coding is another big factor. As I’ve said when you hire a custom designer, most of what you would see is in the front-end. But how about the back-end? How about how codes are optimal? How its integration maximizes the search engine traffic? Or is it even w3c compliant?

So I’m laying out the floor on you to speak. What do you think about the custom themes and the premium themes? Which one do you prefer the most?

Making Noise With Zip And Email Submits

by Melvin · Nov 8, 2008

LOL… I got tired of titles with “make money online” phrase types so lets use a different one. So probably a lot of you mostly kids have never ever made a thought of jumping into affiliate marketing because of its big risk. Well I don’t want to do it too before and I just kinda started because I think I have earned about $450-$600 online then with different methods so basically I just had the startup income.

As days pass by and more and more people are jumping w/making money online, some people can say that it became more competitive and saturated as well and no doubt its true. But I can say that it has become a lot easier nowadays. Just look at email and zip submits. There are offers paying $7+ for an email and while $7 is not that big, its certainly huge for an email.  The great thing about promoting zip and email submits is the fact that its a low risk type. Maybe you couldn’t make 20 million in a year w/it but certainly it doesn’t take much effort on how to do it. And also there are a lot of instructions there that I have read and I believe has done a great job of really teaching people how to do it. Anyway here’s a screen shot of how I did it with Copeac(It’s not a big amount, anyway…)

If you’re out trying to learn the circles of affiliate marketing then try email and zip submits. I mean a lot of advertisers and affiliate companies are slowly embracing it and wherever you go there’s always this type of offer. But anyway Im using Copeac with it and well there’s no harm on trying their network. 🙂

The Proper Way Of Doing Paid Posting

by Melvin · Sep 20, 2008

So I have never posted anything this month that has something to do with blogging. I just thought I would post one. 🙂 Well, paid post or paid reviews is a thing that is really in right now. I mean almost everyone has given their a blog a go signal to have it. It’s just surprsing how many people do not actually know how to do it the proper way. In forums and discussion threads, I always hear “you have to choose between the pr and the money” and some “oh, I don’t want to piss Google” and such stuffs. The thing is there is really nothing wrong with paid posting and links and blah blah. Matt Cutts has explained it well and still I thought many didn’t get it. So here are the guidelines (very few)

  1. Disclose it! – This is the first rule first and foremost. Unless you’re doing a review from those networks that are taking a cut, you should always tell your readers and Google that what you wrote is a paid review or some sort like that. I know a lot of people (including me) getting away with it with not disclosing but believe me you will hurt your blog in the long term if you do not disclose it
  2. Rel=’nofollow’ – How hard it is to put that simple stuff on your code? Well basically Google frowns on links that pass pr juice and you could get penalized. Although I do see a lot of bloggers nowadays not nofollowing links and well they do disclose though, that it is a paid post. And I think the disclosure would automatically mean something to Google as those sites pr were never dropped. Or Maybe I can tell Google they’re passing PR Juice. 😉

So thats it. Basically those are the only things that bloggers should keep in mind when doing paid posting. People who told you that the end of paid links and postings are near are stupid. The thing you always have to remember is that Google is the largest and the best search engine and they always say they can weed out any spam. Follow what they say and you’ll be all fine!

Guess What, My PR is 0 Again!

by Melvin · Sep 13, 2008

Just woke up this morning and well upon looking at the toolbar of my firefox, it stated that I got a pr0 rankings anew. I immediately head on to my SEOMOZ account and indeed my blog has became a pr0 just a couple of hours ago..

Let’s face it the pagerank on toolbars is something a lot of people building links are always looking at. Although, it doesn’t make much sense and the real PR algo is what counts, it still makes sense to have a fair overall ranking. Back to the PR update, its strange because I have never done any paid post and all links and banners ads here are nofollowed so I’m not passing the PR juice. I don’t think I have done black hat link building stuffs or so… Hmm. what do you think?

Sphinn Is More Than A Social Network

by Melvin · Aug 12, 2008

SphinnLike any other stuffs in the world, social networks have increased a lot these days. You can submit your own content, find great discussions and chunk in with a lot of traffic. But well not all managed to create a buzz for themselves. So now I am going to talk about Sphinn, a social network for everyone who is involve in internet marketing, SEO, and blogging and so. Sphinn probably is one of my big favorites. It is owned by SEO godfather Danny Sullivan. They are like digg (not as polluted though) wherein you can submit your content. People who like it will sphinn it and those who do not will bury it.

One thing with I like with Sphinn is that it’s very educational and you can learn a lot from it. Before I used to jack up my content there and hope for a share of traffic. When you look at Sphinn, it has a lot of interesting posts there gathered and compiled. Unlike Digg who can easily be gamed, Sphinn prefers to be different. I like the way they nofollow links from the sites that do not hit the frontpage. It’s a great way to measure the quality of the articles. Most of the articles and entries there are about SEO and SEM which I am very interested about.

Oh well… Maybe someday they can release a book with the compilations of the best entries. Just my 2 cents

Did You SEO Your Site?

by Melvin · Jun 17, 2008

SEOWell going back when this blog was born, one of the things I have planned is to experiment on different stuffs. So the first thing that I did was not to optimize my site for search engines and see if the traffic can still have its way. Basically, at first I don’t really feel optimizing this site much for SE because it’s a personal one and besides I know people will somehow get here. I even remember someone saying “SEO your site dude”. Of course I understand that I must make the most of search engines.

Looking to my Analytics, I saw that the blog had over 800 page views and a very high bounce rate and NO traffic from Search Engines. So what I did last week was tweak my site for search engines. I didn’t really do it fullblast, as I’ve said i’m in the testing mode. This week I was surprised to see that there was a small spike on traffic from search engines. The 0% before turned to 6%. It only means that optimizing really works and it works for the good of your site.

I have seen several blogs with great contents not optimizing their site and I don’t really have anything against them. Who knows they might just be testing the waters too! For those people who do not know it, it’s not really hard actually. You just need to read and usually it’s easier than what most people think. Google loves WordPress blogs a lot and having a wordpress site is a great booster whatever projects you may have. Joost De Valk has written a very very very great guide on WordPress SEO.

How about you? Have you completely optimized your site already? Did you SEO it?
