Don’t Have Domains, Start Picking Up Now

Posted on February 05, 2009 by Melvin

When I was just getting started with my online ventures I was wondering why people are spending their dimes buying up domains and never really using it as a website. I mean they buy about a hundred a only put 10% of it to real websites/blogs and 90% being just parked. I was pretty much wondering why should people jack up themselves registering domain names and only have it unused

Well now I was year older, I looked at my namecheap account and have seen about 35 domains in it and quickly realized buying domain is really a part of business.  35 isn’t a big number but most people don’t even get pass 5 domains because they think its retarded to get a lot of it. I mean you’ll just never know. Maybe 10 years ago, you had a thought of a domain douchebag.com and well before it was unknown. But if you would sell it right now, seriously you’re easily off to 5-6 figures just for that domain.

Not really talking about Domain Flipping here but basically its just that you always have to have domains as an internet property. Just as the same as in offline world, probably domains can be treated as land properties wherein you buy it and just use it when you already think something good of it.

So think of it and instead of spending $50 a month in buying shirts, why not just invest in registering domain names. I’m not really sure how to say you’ll make your money back but I assure picking up domains is a great business strategy..

Domain marketing can be a nice way of earning money. I have not yet given it a try. Once I have sufficient money for this I will surely do domain marketing. It takes time but is profitable.

I felt exactly the same way. I have about 8 domains right now. Have you sold off any domains yet?

Im not really planning to. Some of the domains are just being used for redirection purposes and some others are just complete .info junky domains

I don’t think it’s a really good way to make money, because it’s like gambling, most of the domains don’t increase their price…

I think that this Idea has merit but for you to make money from it you have to register domain names which are likely to be get popular in next 5 Years like some new business started in your Area and you think they will take their Business online in couple of Years.

Funny thing is that I completely bashed the idea of doing this for people nowadays unless you have some kick butt money to start off your business. At a point, I’ve had over 200 domains and have just recently let about 50 of them drop due to the industry itself just not being great for people who can’t devote 100% of their day into this market.

sad to hear that. i think you’re right, if you have over a hundred domains, and you’re either working full time or studying full time its going to be hard..

Hahha, I had the very same thoughts – “Why people are buying domains and not using them”. Like you, now I understand it and use it myself. Damn, if I would have the knowledge back in the early 90s I could be a millionaire now.

But the only thing I hate about buying domains at godaddy is that it requires a verified paypal account. I mostly buy domains in name cheap. But I don’t know that there is something called domain marketing. Thanks for the mention

      Melvin Reply:

I do also use namecheap a lot. Btw, you’re outside US thats why you arent verified right? why? I mean im from Philippines too but Im verified. Getting a verified PP account is one of the better things to do i must say

This seems to be a pretty good method, especially if you started out early. Once everybody starts to figure it out…the business may get a little smaller.

I have 20+ domains in my namecheap account as well but most are used as landing page or redirection purposes.

Google love domain name that have been there for years and are usually rank higher for keywords. So doesn’t that makes domain parking a good investment too?

I agree. If I have had the resources (domain name registration costs a lot then) before, I would’ve bought a lot and sell them like crazy now…

I should try now to invest some money for domaining. Your idea looks brilliant.

I agree with you the part of owning a lot of domains – they can really help you with your future business online.

But you should also get them indexed, as that will double if not triple their value

I make a living by writing content for my blogs and websites, and I can’t say that buying and holding domain names is anything I’ve ever gotten into, but at least three separate times over the years, folks have sent me random emails offering to buy my domain names, so I’m sure there is money to be made out there. It’s usually for sites I started and then never did much with (so it’s clear they’re just interested in the domain name). Of course, I never sell them. I’ll wait 10 years and see what they’re worth then, hah.

This can be very profitable, if you think of a great name, you can end up selling it in the future, especially if its a product that is going to come out and does not exist yet. The company who wants that domain can buy it off of you
