I think you are completely right! Blogging especially is NOT for everyone, it takes a large amount of discipline and dedication, far more than that of a static site, that does not need constant attention and updating.

Blogs definately can make money. It's just that you usually make more money with a blog that isn't made for making money than with a one that is made just to make money.

Good affiliate program + Writing with passion = Money!

It really depends on why you are blogging and how you blog, and how you monetize your blog.

For example, if your blog is 100% original content worth reading, written with the purpose of establishing and proving yourself as an expert in some field (please don't do another "how to make money online, now buy my book" blog unless you are a millionaire), and you monetize it by selling a book you wrote yourself (not someone else's book), if you truly are an expert and have shown that to your readers, they will buy the book and you will make money. If they are not buying, then they probably think you are full of stinky brown stuff.

But this is work...a lot of work. There is no easy way to just slap some random stuff on a page and make a living from it.

Writing your own book is easier than writing a post every single day that proves you know what you are talking about. And we all know that writing a quality book is a ton of work, otherwise we would all have a bunch for sale on Amazon.com, right?

The majority of blogs I see are worth about $0.10. If their owners have made more than that, they should consider themselves lucky and quit. All they do is take material from other blogs, do a poor job of saying the same thing, and throw it on a page and hope it will make them rich. There is absolutely nothing original, and definitely nothing fresh, new, or interesting to capture the interest of readers that are reading the same stuff on all the big A-list blogs, already.

For example, you can't get rich by doing a poor job of rewriting Lifehacker's posts. It just doesn't work. By the time readers get to your blog they have already read the original. Same with basing a blog on bad summaries of John Chow's posts.

Blogs will not make you money, but they can show you the shortcut to make money. If there are no blogs, how will you know you can make money online? You can only use search engines to find website that tells you ways of making money online, but these websites would not give out the information for free.
